Privacy fears emerge over India’s Criminal Procedure Identification Bill

BBC News reports Indian Parliament’s passage of the Criminal Procedure Identification Bill and its provisions for increased biometric data collection by law enforcement is stirring privacy concerns. The bill allows authorities to collect detainees’ data, including fingerprints, retina scans, behavioral attributes, and retain it for up to 75 years. Prime Minister Narendra Modi championed the bill as means to move toward modern policing, while opposing lawmakers called the bill “dystopian” given its increased surveillance. The bill goes to President Ram Nath Kovind for final consideration.
